Best Paving Materials for Sydney Pool Surrounds

Pool paving has to do four things at once: stay cool underfoot, stay grippy when wet, resist salt and chlorine, and still look good in ten years. No single material wins on all four, so the choice is always a trade-off against the site and the way the space is used.

Travertine

Still the most requested pool paver in Sydney, and for good reason - it stays noticeably cooler than dark stone, has a natural grip when unfilled and tumbled, and softens beautifully with age. It is porous, so it needs sealing and will patina. Best in a warm, informal palette.

Granite and bluestone

Dense, hard-wearing and excellent for high-traffic and modern schemes. Both hold heat, so mid to dark tones can be uncomfortable barefoot on a west-facing deck. Flamed or sawn-and-flamed finishes give the slip resistance you want at the waterline.

Porcelain

Almost zero porosity, no sealing, no staining from sunscreen or leaf tannin, and consistent colour. Excellent technically; the compromise is that it reads as a manufactured product beside natural stone. Rectified 20mm external grades on pedestals are our usual specification.

Concrete - honed, exposed or in-situ

Cost-effective across large areas and architecturally strong in the right house. Requires careful jointing and control cuts, and colour variation between pours is real. Honed finishes need sealing to resist salt attack.

Choose the paver you can walk on barefoot in February, not the one that photographs best in a showroom.

Detailing matters more than the material

Coping profile, joint width, fall to drainage, bedding method and edge restraint determine whether paving stays flat and safe. We lay pool surrounds on either a full mortar bed or adjustable pedestals over a drained, waterproofed slab, with falls set away from the pool and into a linear drain.
