I began my career in landscaping in 1989, studying horticulture before gaining my landscape qualifications and licence. Over the years, I continued to expand my knowledge through carpentry, renovation and building qualifications, because I wanted to understand not just landscaping, but how every element of an outdoor project comes together.

More than 30 years in this industry has taught me that experience is about much more than knowing how to build something. It is knowing how to price a project realistically, how long it should take, where problems are likely to arise and, importantly, when a particular part of a project should be entrusted to someone who specialises in that field.

That experience has shaped what SDL Creations is today.

Earlier in my career, we completed a high volume of smaller landscape projects. We built a strong reputation and achieved results our clients were extremely happy with, but I always wanted to take the business further. My goal was to create complete outdoor environments where the design, construction, workmanship and final presentation could all be held to the same high standard.

Today, SDL Creations focuses on comprehensive residential landscape projects, typically ranging from $150,000 to $600,000. Rather than trying to have one crew perform every aspect of a complex build, we bring together experienced specialist trades, licensed contractors and builders for the areas in which they excel, supported and managed by the SDL team throughout the project.

SDL supervisors and landscape team provide site management, preparation, construction support and, most importantly, quality control from beginning to end. I also remain personally involved in our projects and regularly attend site, meet with clients and inspect the work. After more than three decades, I still believe that if my name and the SDL name are attached to a project, I need to know that it is being built to the standard I expect.

Sometimes that means making a decision that costs us more because I know it will produce a better result. I have always believed that the long-term reputation of SDL is worth more than the profit on any individual job.

There is another side of our business that is equally important to me. We understand that we are not simply working on a construction site - we are working in someone's home.

Our standards cover the way our team presents themselves, communicates, behaves on site and respects our clients, their families, neighbours and property. Uniforms, site cleanliness, professional language and conduct are not small details to us. They are part of the SDL standard.

Behind the scenes, my wife Rachel manages our office and administration with the same philosophy. We believe good service should remain personal, thorough and human. While technology helps us run projects efficiently, we don't want SDL to become a faceless, automated construction company.

My ambition for SDL has never been to become the biggest landscaping company in Sydney. I want us to become one of the most respected.

That means taking on the right projects, surrounding ourselves with exceptional people, continually learning and improving, and never allowing growth or turnover to become more important than workmanship.

After more than 30 years, I am still passionate about what we create - and I believe our best work is still ahead of us.
