The region
The Eastern Suburbs sit on sandstone country between the harbour and the ocean. Blocks are tight, streetscapes are protected, and homes range from Victorian terraces in Paddington to interwar apartments above Rose Bay. Our work here is about editing — quieter courtyards, considered plant palettes, and materials that hold up to salt and southerly weather.

Narrow frontages, sandstone retaining, wind exposure at ridge-top sites, and near-constant heritage overlay in Paddington and Woollahra. Rear gardens are often small but face north — every square metre earns its keep.
Climate & soil
Coastal-temperate. Full afternoon sun on east-facing terraces, sea-spray load in Bronte and Vaucluse, sandy free-draining soils. We specify salt-tolerant palettes (Westringia, Coastal Rosemary, Banksia integrifolia, Pandorea) and stone that won't spall — honed sandstone, granite, and travertine over cheaper limestones.
Council & approvals
Woollahra and Waverley are strict on tree removal, boundary setbacks, and heritage conservation areas. Most terrace rear-yard renovations proceed as Complying Development, but pools, structural retaining above 600mm, and any street-facing change usually require a DA. We prepare the drawings, arborist reports and neighbour notifications end-to-end.

Can I put a pool in a Paddington terrace?
Usually yes — plunge pools around 2.5 × 5m fit most rear yards once we work through side-access, party-wall proximity, and Council's landscape-area calculation. It's a DA every time, but the outcomes are exceptional.
Do coastal gardens need special maintenance?
The plant palette does the heavy lifting. Once established, salt-tolerant species need less feeding than inland gardens; we specify hardware in 316 stainless and marine-grade fixings so nothing rusts back onto the stonework.
