Darlinghurst Courtyard & Outdoor Kitchen

An inner-city courtyard reimagined as a private outdoor room — fluted timber outdoor kitchen with stone benchtops, travertine paving, a black stone water feature wall, wire-trained climbers and curated lighting. Awarded Gold at the 2025 National Landscape Design Awards.
The Brief
A tight inner-city courtyard that felt like a light well — the client wanted a private outdoor room they could cook, host and unwind in year-round.
The Site
North-facing but overlooked on three sides. Existing surface was tired concrete with poor drainage and no shade or screening.
Our Approach
We treated the courtyard as an outdoor room, not a garden — architectural walls, fluted timber joinery and a black stone water wall for a still, hotel-like atmosphere. Wire-trained climbers soften the vertical surfaces over time.
Build Detail
Travertine paving on adjustable pedestals over new drainage, fluted spotted-gum outdoor kitchen with a honed stone benchtop, integrated stainless BBQ, uplit black batten screens and low-voltage garden lighting on a dusk-to-dawn circuit.
