Landscape design & construction in Inner West

Federation and Californian bungalow gardens, built for family life.

The region

The Inner West is where family homes meet real garden space — deeper blocks, mature street trees, and clients who want their backyard to actually be lived in. We design outdoor rooms that read as extensions of the house, not standalone show gardens.

Character

Deeper rear yards than the East, established liquidambars and figs, back lanes for side access, and character homes that dictate material choices — recycled brick, timber decking, painted weatherboard.

Climate & soil

Temperate inland. Warmer summers than the coast, cooler nights, heavier clay soils that need drainage engineering. Frost is rare but afternoon shade from mature street trees drives plant selection toward Rhaphiolepis, Camellia, Buxus and structural evergreens.

Council & approvals

Inner West Council preserves character streetscapes aggressively. Deck heights, front-fence treatments and any removal of significant trees are the friction points. Canada Bay is more permissive on rear-yard scope but stricter on foreshore lots along the Parramatta River.

Signature work in Inner West

What we build here, and why.

Family entertaining decks & cabanas

Spotted-gum decking, integrated banquette seating, and lit cabanas that let a Federation home host in every season.

Pool re-alignment & renovation

Rebuilding legacy 80s and 90s pools — new tile, new coping, new equipment sheds — without demolishing the surrounding garden.

Waterfront foreshore landscaping

Chiswick and Drummoyne foreshore reserve permits, jetty-adjacent terracing and view-line planting.

Questions we hear

Working in Inner West.

Can you work around our established trees?

Yes — and we prefer it. Mature figs and liquidambars are the character of the Inner West. We commission arborist reports early, design footings clear of TPZ, and use permeable paving where root protection matters.

Is the clay soil a real problem?

It affects drainage, footings and plant selection — not what's possible. We spec French drains, ag-line and dry wells early, and choose clay-tolerant species so the garden doesn't fail in a wet winter.
